You've heard us say it before: The gender pay gap is an economic security issue for women and an economic development issue for Wyoming.
Here's further confirmation from the Economic Policy Institute by way of their gender pay gap calculator.
Click that "Calculate" button and this is what you'll find out:
You are paid $17,166 less than a comparable man.
Well that felt like a slap in the face. Do you know what you would do with $17,166 additional dollars? We're guessing you'd do a lot of what we'd do: sleep better at night, visit the doctor when we're kinda sick instead of really sick, and support local businesses.
EPI goes on to say: "Your $60,000 salary falls at the 52nd percentile among working women with the same age and education as you. A comparable man is paid $77,166."
Click further along and the Economic Policy Institute will tell you: "If inequality hadn't risen and we closed the gender wage gap, you could be paid $96,798 per year. That’s a raise of 61%!"
Further, we agree with EPI when they write, "The gender wage gap is a big problem, and it’s not the only thing we have to worry about. Most working people—women and men—have been hurt by skyrocketing inequality over the last 40 years. We need to change the rules so that a growing economy benefits all working people."
Here are a few of the things that we can do that would close the pay gap and improve women's economic security and, in the process, improve Wyoming's economic prospects:
Raise the minimum wage
Eliminate the tipped minimum wage
Stop asking for salary history
Publish organizational pay tiers
Conduct wage audits
Promote wage transparency
Support paid family leave
Improve access to affordable childcare
